Thomas Austin was born in England but by the age of 21 he was a resident of New York City when he married Martha Haigh, who was also born in England. In 1839 the family was living in Indiana since that is where Charlotte Marie was born and she was the first child born in Indiana. Martha died in 1847 at the age of 33 after having 8 children we know of. He married quickly to Jane McCauley who was about 17 years his junior. They also had 8 children.
1861-1862 Thomas Ralph Austin was a Surgeon during the Civil War. He was attached to Company S, Indiana 23rd Infantry Regiment from Indiana on 12 August 1861 and he mustered out on 17 Sep 1862. He was stationed at Camp Jessie, Lafayette Park, St. Louis, Missouri. From the Ruth Lilly Medical Library at the Indiana University School of Medicine Historical Database there are several entries of Thomas Austin's military records regarding his time served as surgeon in the 23rd Reg. It sounds like he was a much respected doctor. This record also indicates he may have studied at Oxford University in England. 1870 Census Thomas has switched occupations and now he is listed as an Episcopal Clergyman. They live in Jeffersonville Ward, Clark, Indiana. All remaining children from the second marriage live with them. James is a druggist, Martha, Laura, Anna, Morris, Charles and Ralph. Their ages are 21-1. They have his age incorrect they say 55 but he was born in 1810 so he would have been 60.

"Thomas R. Austin died at his residence in this city at a late hour last night. He was born in London, England, June 16, 1810. He entered the school at Bath, and afterwards entered Cambridge, but graduated with the highest honors at Oxford. He educated himself for the ministry, which vocation he followed for a short time. He emigrated to America in 1833...After remaining in this country for a short time, he returned to Europe, and entered one of the medical colleges on the continent...At the beginning of the war, he entered the service with the Twenty-third Indiana and was soon promoted to brigade surgeon...He was always an active member of 33rd degree Masons...He filled the rectorship of the Episcopal churches at Jeffersonville and Terre Haute, but broken health compelled him to abandon the ministry and seek the seclusion of his farm near Olney, Ill. While living there his effects, including the finest masonic library in the United States, valued at $15,000, were destroyed by fire. He then accepted the rectorship of the St. James Episcopal Church, in this city, which he held until a short time since, when a return of heart disease in a more aggravated form necessitated his resigning..."
