Accompanied his parents from Vermont at the age of 13. He went to the local schools and eventually went to Union College where he graduated with honors in 1811.

Once becoming a lawyer he entered the law office of Judge John Wells in New York City. In 1814 he formed a partnership with his father, Amasa, which he shared for 24 years.

In 1836 he was elected the cashier of the Bank of Troy, and gave up his law practice to devote his entire time to finance.
