Myers, Mary Louise, 80, retired teacher, died Monday. Visitation 5-7 p.m. Wednesday and Rosary service 7 p.m. Wednesday, both at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Funeral Home; and funeral Mass 10:30 a.m. Thursday, St. Mary's Catholic Church. (Tulsa World)

Mary Louise Myers, 80, was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 21 2012, after a long, well lived life. She was a devout Catholic and her faith was the cornerstone of her life. Mary was born in Champaign, Illinois to Cletus and Elizabeth Pilgrim.

She grew up on a farm outside of Rantoul, Illinois and graduated as valedictorian of Rantoul High School in 1949. She then graduated from Illinois State Normal University in 1953 and began teaching elementary students. On June 5, 1954 she married Glenn Myers who was in the Air Force. Together they raised five children and traveled many places during Glenn's Air Force career.

Mary was a wonderful mother who instilled a love for reading and travel in her children. In 1970 the Myers' family settled in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mary resumed her teaching career and earned her Master's degree from Northeastern State University. One of Mary‘s proudest moments was seeing her five children graduate from college. Mary retired from Tulsa Public Schools in 1992.

After retirement Mary enjoyed international travel with her husband Glenn and they both enjoyed many Elderhostel trips. Mary enjoyed helping others, and volunteered for Tulsa Public Schools, Church of Saint Mary, and was an adult literacy tutor for the Tulsa Library. She was an active and dedicated member of the Legion of Mary.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Cletus and Elizabeth Pilgrim.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years; five children, spouses; grandchildren, spouses; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; brother-in-law; and brother.

To honor her memory and celebrate her life, a Visitation Service will be held Wednesday May 23, from 5:00pm – 7:00pm with a Rosary to follow. Visitation and Rosary will be at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel, 91st and Harvard, South Tulsa. A Mass of Christian Burial in recognition of her life will be Thursday, May 24,10:30am at Church of Saint Mary, 1347 E 49th Pl, Tulsa, OK. Private family gravesite service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. A special thank you to the caregivers and friends at Autumn Leaves Alzheimer's Residence and the staff and hospice care at St. Francis Hospital.
