Dean A. Butzlaff
Leavenworth, WA
Dean A. Butzlaff passed away from cancer at the age of 84. He was embraced in angel's wings and entered into Heaven on April 25, 2012, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee. Dean was born to Paul and Alice (Podrasky) Butzlaff and raised in Portland, OR, where in school, he was advanced two grades and graduated from Benson High School at the age of 16. He then went to work as a lifeguard and later enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country with pride during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He served as an enlisted man for 17 years, and then was asked by his superiors to take a direct commission, eventually retiring after 31 years as a Major. Dean was wounded twice in active combat and received two Purple Hearts. While stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany, he met the love of his life, Walburga "Wally" Schesink. They were married at Degerndorf, Germany on June 27, 1946, and later their family grew with two daughters, Christa and Debra. Dean and Wally were married just two months shy of 66 years. In 1975, they moved to Leavenworth, WA, because they fell in love with the town and the four seasons. Dean worked for and retired from the Leavenworth School District, where he was a bus driver. Those children are grown now, but still said hello when they saw him. Dean and Wally were very active in the community with the Royal Bavarians and were Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus for many years. Dean was all smiles when Wally was made Royal Lady in 1992. Dean always said the loves of his life were always family, country and all his friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Wally, of the family home; daughters, Christa (Raymond) Currie and Debra (Jim) Bramlage; granddaughter, Rachael Debiaso; grandson, Nathan Bramlage; and great-grandson, Cyrus Debiaso.
Wally and family wish to thank all the staff, doctors and nurses at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee for dad's excellent care and compassion during his illness.
A Funeral Service honoring Dean will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Ward's Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth, with Concluding Service and Military Honors held at the Mt. View Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Ward's Funeral Chapel. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
