The family left their home in Switzerland in Oct 1850 and arrived in Highland IL on 13 Jan 1851. His date of birth in his obit was given as 15 May 1811. He followed the trade of cooper until he retired in 1868 or 1869.The date of death represents the date shown on the record for military headstones placed on the grave by the U.S. Government for military service. Joseph was a private in Company A, 30th Regiment of the Missouri Infantry. The headstone was supplied by "Vt. Marble Company, Proctor, Vermont;" the memorial was contracted November 30, 1894.

He married Catherine Sidler on August 14, 1837; they married in Knessnacht. Catherine was from Immensee, Switzerland.

The couple had thirteen children and during the celebration were able to share this event with five of their children who were still living:

• Sophia Ammann Iberg of Highland, Illinois
