He was born on July 18, 1924, in Geneseo, the son of Serphine and Marie (Gobeyn) VanDeWoestyne. He attended Spring Creek School. He was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church and Henry County Farm Bureau. He also was a member of the Holstein Cow Association for many years. He sold Wyffels seed corn for 18 years and was an avid toy tractor collector. He enjoyed attending auctions, fishing and having coffee at the Atkinson Sale Barn Restaurant.
