Maude Davis Philhower, 97, died at her home at Williamsburg Landing on Thursday,
Sept. 3, 1998.
Mrs. Philhower was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, where she had
served as president of the Women of the Church. She had volunteered as a Red
Cross Gray Lady during World War II and served as a hostess for Colonial
Williamsburg Foundation. Active in Republican politics, she was the first woman
to run for the House of Delegates from the First District. She was a member of
Greensprings Garden Club.
The widow of Louis Stout Philhower, she is survived by four children, Jane
Philhower Young and her husband, Herbert, of Williamsburg, Margaret Philhower
Atkins and her husband, Douglas, of Kirkwood, Mo., Louis Stout Philhower Jr. and
his wife, Mary Verner Campbell Philhower, of Macon, Ga., and Davis Philhower and
his wife, Margaret Medlock Philhower, of Montgomery, Ala.; a brother, Russell
Burnley Davis of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church with
Dr. W. Clay McCauley officiating. Interment will be private. Arrangements by
Bucktrout of Williamsburg.
