"Jake" Boner, 81, Died Today at Farm Home

J.T. "Uncle Jake" Boner died at the age of 81 early today on the farm, two miles south of West Frankfort, on which he had spent his entire life. He had been ill since Thanksgiving Day.

Mr. Boner figured priminently in the pioneer life of West Frankfort and the early development of the Southern Illinois coal industry. Much of the coal that has been mined in this community has been extracted from deposits beneath the surface of the 500 Acre Boner homestead.

He, with other land owners, sold the first land and mineral rights acquired by D.W. Buchanan for the sinking of Old Ben Mine No. 8. He still retained 360 acres of his land holdings at the time of his death.

Mr. Boner was of the rugged pioneer type. He had enjoyed good health and had been active about his farm until stricken by the recent illness. He summoned members of his family last night and calmly told them that he realized he was going to die.

The body will lie in state at the Boner country home, two miles south of the city on the old Johnson City road, until 2 0'clock Monday when the funeral will be conducted at the Boner Cemetery. Rev F.F. Otto, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will conduct the service.

Mr. Boner was the father of Roy, Sherman, Arthur, Arlie and Howard Boner and Mrs. George Willmore, all of West Frankfort. Sheriff E.R. Powell of Benton and Sam Powell of Auburn, Wash., are foster sons.

He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Oscar Adelsburger of Creal Springs, 17 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Parents: Josephus Boner and Mary Ann Harper
Wife: Lucy Louisa Samuel Ellen Richerson(named so because her father was killed so her mother used all the names they had picked out for the coming child)
