The son of Frederick & Catharine (Stein) Schwalm, he married Elizabeth Schertel April 17, 1853, and fathered Polly (b. 11/20/54). Elizabeth died in 1855, and he married Sarah Rubendall March 29, 1857, and fathered Amelia Jane (b. 10/04/57), Elizabeth Anna (b. 12/01/59 - married Victor Emmanuel Scheib), Margaretha Cassy (b. 06/12/62), David Wilson (b. 10/06/64), Frances E. A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
- Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-one at McCoysville, Mifflin County, September 13, 1862, mustered into state service that day as a sergeant with Co. I, 18th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 26, 1862, an experience as uneventful as it was brief.
- Drafted at the stated age of thirty-one by Pennsylvania October 22, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 15 as a private with Co. F, 171st Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). Elected as 1st lieutenant, he mustered at the rank November 15 and honorably discharged with his company August 8, 1863.
He lived at least the last twenty-five years of his life in Upper Mahantongo Township, Schuylkill County, where he served as justice of the peace.
