John was born in Weston-U-Penyard, Herefordshire, England to John and Hannah Park Enniss. His father died when he was 12 years old. The family were members of the United Brethren (a group of devout worshipers who had broken from the Wesleyan Methodists) and later were converted by Wilford Woodruff to the Mormon church. John was baptized in June of 1841.

On Dec. 14, 1845, John married Elizabeth Boulter in the Ross Chapel in Ross, Herefordshire, England.

John and Elizabeth had 2 daughters, Augusta Comfort and Susannah when they sailed on the steamship James Pennel on Sept. 2, 1849 to join the saints in Utah Territory. There was also 5 members of Elizabeth's family with them. They spent the winter in New Orleans, where there baby, Susannah died and was buried.

They worked their way up to Council Bluffs, Iowa and were working for funds to continue their trip to Salt Lake City. They suffered many trials there, John returned from work and found their cabin burned to the ground but all the family safe. Later a cholera epidemic swept through their camp and Elizabeth's parents and Uncle died and were buried there.

The family arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1852 and in the spring of 1853 settled in South Willow Creek which is now called Draper. On April 6, 1855 their son John Heber Enniss was born and John's mother, Hannah Park Enniss arrived that fall from England and moved in with the family.

John was asked by Brigham Young to take Jane Oakey as his plural wife, which he did. Her family were from England also, and members of the United Brethren before converting the the church.

John had additional children with Elizabeth, Edith Elisabeth and Mary who both died young. He also had a son, George Ralph, and daughter, Rozillah Jane with this wife, Jane Oakey. This son died as an infant.

Jane died in 1863 and was buried in the Enniss family plot in Draper. In 1891, Elizabeth died and John lived for an additonal 27 years after that, dying at age 96.

John lived a full and righteous life and was greatly loved by all his family.
