Joseph Chapple, the son of Lewis Chapple and Carrie Blanton, was born June 2, 1902, in Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas. He and his family moved to Houston not long after his birth. His formative years were spent in 4th Ward's Freedman's Town. By 1910, the family moved to the Greater 5th Ward community where he remained and worked for Southern Pacific Railroad as a Blacksmith Helper, and then as a Treating Engineer in the Wood Preserving Division until he retired in 1958.
Joseph died of arteriosclerotic vascular heart disease on Tuesday, August 23, 1966 at 3:30 AM. His funeral was held Saturday, August 27, 1966 at 11 AM at Clay & Clay Mortuary, 3131 Lyons Ave, Houston, TX; Rev. I. Carter, Officiating. He was interred first in Paradise Cemetery, Houston, TX, on August 27, 1966. Then moved a few weeks later to Golden Gate Cemetery, Houston, TX.
