James E. Ackles was the son of William M. Ackles and Mary Ann Conway-Long (also married to a Coles), he is their second child born of this marriage between his parents. James married two women, Elizabeth Betson (Besty) Rader on 11 Aug 1831 in Stonelick, Clermont Co.OH they moved to Pittsfield, Pike Co. IL by 1853-1855 as they are enumerated as being there for the state census. From our family folk lore Elizabeth and Hersa died between 1860-1863 while trying to go to Missouri. James turns around and takes his wife and child back to Salem, Highland Co. OH to be buried with her mother Margaret Whitlatch-Rader (wife to George Rader Jr. who died in Time, Pike Co. IL in 1861). Margaret Whitlatch-Rader is buried under the Cherry Tree across the street from their family farm, there are three graves there, Margarets' and without any names on the others I am praying that they are Elizabeth and Hersa's. They are the size of one adult and one child. With the help of a Highland Co. OH researcher that is the only thing that makes any sense whatsoever, seeing as how Elizabeth is not buried in Pike Co. IL in and or around Pittsfield or New Salem where her brother in law lived with his wife and children. James and the rest of his children find their way to Grundy Co. MO.
James then re-marries on 11 Dec 1864 to Tabitha Elizabeth Allega-Street (she was a widow who had been married to William G (George) Street who died 16 Aug 1863 in Memphis, Shelby Co. TN while serving in the Civil War). William Street is buried at the National Cemetery there.
James and Elizabeth had 9 children total, James and Tabitha had just two children between them, one being my great grandfather Stephen David Ackles.
As far as we know this cemetery is no longer in use and probably the headstones are gone or in bad disrepair. So we have never been able to get a headstone picture of this grave site. We now know where Tabitha is buried and that is in Palouse, Whitman Co. WA. It use to be called Fraternity Cemetery when she was buried there now it is called "Greenwood Cemetery" with a Fraternity section. I could not find her until finally I located her on the Washington State Digital Archives Death Index one day while browsing their site. I have been to the cemetery that she is in, it is pretty and lays on the top of a hill just outside the city of Palouse. Stephen worked for Potlatch at the mill being a lumber grader until 1911-1912 then they came to Spokane, WA and again he was still employed by Potlatch Co. being a lumber grader. At the time that I visited there was no one around to take the time to go to the cemetery, so I do not know where exactly she is buried. Sometime I would love to go back and see exactly where they are laid to rest.
