Married Julia Lorillard. They had two sons, Frederick Joseph and Julian.

He was a very industrious individual who amassed a great fortune in banking and in business with his brother-in-law Horace S. Taylor in the firm of F.P. James and Company. He had great holdings of real estate in New York City.

Upon his death, his widow, Julia married Civil War Union General Dan Butterfield.

Listed as a banker. Obituary is located in New York Daily Tribune on May 30 1884 page 5 column four
