Louis Ervin, son of a South Carolina farmer, would become the successful owner of an insurance company, possibly Afro-American Life. His mausoleum is next to the mausoleum belonging to Abraham Lincoln Lewis, one of the founders of the Afro-American Life Company. Louis was the first sales agent for the Afro-American Life.

Louis was the son of Mary Keith and Isham Ervin of South Carolina. In 1880, he was living with his parents and siblings on their farm in Darlington, South Carolina. The household, all born in South Carolina, included: Isham Ervin, age 30, a farmer; Mary, age 28; henry, age 10; Louis, age 8; Samuel, age 3; and Mary L., age 1.

He married Elzena in 1894 and by 1900, they were living at 726 Lafayette Street in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida. They had two children, both born in Florida: Mabel, born in 1897 and Frank, born in January 1898. Louis was working as a painter. By 1910, Louis was working as a grocery store porter and they had added another child to the family, Leroy, born in Georgia in 1904.

By 1930, the family was living in a home they owned at 1664 Evergreen and Lewis was working in insurance. Leroy was the only one of their children still at home. Their son Frank had married Ruby, had a son, Frank, Jr. and was living at 740 East 5th. Frank was working as a life insurance agent.

By 1935, Louis was a widower and the owner of an insurance business. Elzena had died in 1934. Their son Leroy had become a dentist and was still living at home, as was their daughter Mabel, who had married. The household included; Louis, age 62, born in South Carolina, college education; his son, Dr. Leroy Ervin, age 30, born in Georgia, college education, a dentist; his daughter, Mabel Latson, age 34, born in Georgia, college education, a housewife; his granddaughter, Ernestine Latson, age 10, born in Georgia; and his grandson, Louis Latson, age 12, born in Florida.

At some point, Louis remarried.
