A funeral service for Jim Otto, age 67, of Spirit Lake, was held Friday, March 30, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Burial was at Lakeview Gardens Cemetery.

James Miller Otto was born Oct. 9, 1944 in Storm Lake to Earl and Eleanor (Miller) Otto.

He graduated from Storm Lake High School, completed his undergraduate studies at Concordia College in St. Paul, Minn. and Seward, Neb.

He later received his Masters at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb.

Jim married Janet Mae Harvey on April 13, 1968 in Seward, Neb. They lived in Emerson, Neb. and Spirit Lake since 1976. Jim worked as a teacher, principal, retail/business owner, RTA Driver, and a 911 dispatcher.

Jim was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He participated in Boy Scouts, the Library Board, Volunteer Fire Department and Iowa DNR gillnetting.

He enjoyed reading, snorkeling, geocaching, fishing, all aspects of nature, Boy Scouts, hiking, playing with his grandchildren, volunteering, genealogy, technology, canoeing, boating and tinkering.

Jim is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter, Julie (David) McAdon from Adel; sons, David (Jen) Otto from West Des Moines, Douglas (Jennifer) Otto from Lake Park; grandchildren, Emma and Christian McAdon, Madelyn, Addison, and Abby Otto; mother, Eleanor Otto from Storm Lake; sister, Nancy (Craig) Sargent from Storm Lake; brother, Bruce (Jane) Otto from Storm Lake and six nieces.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Otto, and father, Earl Otto.
