Evelyn was the daughter of Silas Southard and Frances E. (Addis) Harvey. She married Judge John W. Eddy at Ironia, New Jersey, June 12, 1879. They had three sons and one daughter. The daughter, Esta Clara Eddy, died in Helena in 1883 and is buried in the Benton Avenue Cemetery in Helena.

"Death of Mrs. Eddy. Mrs. John W. Eddy, whose funeral took place yesterday, died at her home in this city at 6 o'clock last Sunday morning. Her death, though somewhat sudden, was not altogether unlooked for, as the disease that caused it had afflicted her since girlhood. When thirteen years old she evinced symptoms of a disorder of the stomach and it soon became apparent that he was afflicted with a fatal malady. It was an ulcerous or cancerous affection of the stomach and was attended with the most intense suffering that attacked her at intervals. Last Thursday night she was seized with one of these attacks - the fourth in three months. Dr. Kellogg, her medical adviser, was sent for and relieved her suffering by administering morphine. Saturday she grew better and her physician and friends thought the spell had passed. At 2 o'clock Sunday morning she was seized with a violent chill, became unconscious shortly after and at 6 o'clock breathed her last. All efforts to avert the crisis were made but to no avail. The deadly disease had completed its work, the ulcer had eaten its way to her vitals and death resulted from a perforation of the walls of the stomach. She passed away in the arms of her devoted husband and surrounded by loving relatives, whose presence soothed her last hours.

"Mrs. John W. Eddy, nee Evelyn May Harvey, was about 30 years of age at the time of her death, having been born in Hackettstown, New Jersey, August 6th, 1857. She came to Montana with her parents when 12 years of age and excepting the period of her education in the East, has resided here ever since. She acquired her education at the Moravian Seminary and graduated at Meriden, New Hampshire. She first met Judge Eddy in Helena and was married to him at Ironia, New Jersey, June 12, 1879. They have made their home in Helena and it was blessed with four children, three boys and a girl. The daughter died three years ago and the boys, the eldest being only five years of age, survive their mother. Mrs. Eddy was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Harvey, who lived at Clancy for several years. Her mother and two brothers are still living at Clancy, while another brother resides near Cartersville (Wolf Creek).

"The deceased was a woman of most excellent qualities. Besides possessing all the domestic and Christian virtues she was accomplished in the literary and musical arts. Her writings were many and have been read with interest by Montana people. A devout member of the Baptist church, she devoted much time to religious affairs and by her connection with different societies did noble work in promoting the good cause. She was a devoted wife and an excellent mother and will be sadly missed by the little ones she leaves behind. Throughout a life of suffering she displayed most wonderful fortitude, bearing her cross patiently and without a murmur. She leaves naught behind her but the memory of a noble life, marked by a heroic patience in suffering, devotion to family and friends and a strict performance of every Christian duty. For the loss of such a wife and mother the sympathy of the whole community goes out to the stricken family." Helena Daily Herald, 4/5/1887 and Helena Weekly Herald, 4/7/1887

"Obituary. Mrs. Evelyn May, wife of John W. Eddy, died suddenly at her residence on Olive street, Sunday last, of a disease known among physicians as cancerous affection of the stomach. The lady has suffered for many years, and all medical skill evidently has availed her naught. She was born at Hackettstown, N.J., August 6, 1857, consequently was at the time of her death almost thirty years of age. She was a graduate of Moravian seminary at Menden, N.H., coming to Montana some twelve years ago. Deceased leaves a bereaved husband and three children to mourn her loss, besides two brothers at Clancy and one at Centerville, in this territory, and numerous relatives in the eastern states. She was a member of the Woman's Exchange and other societies, and the Baptist church of this city. She was an indefatigable worker, both in the Y.M.C.A. and the church, all the members of which institutions will mourn with sorrowful regret her untimely departure. She leaves hosts of friends and acquaintances, who yesterday paid their last sad respects at the burial ceremonies. The funeral took place yesterday from the residence at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, which all friends and acquaintances attended." Helena Independent, 4/3/1887

On April 4, 1887, Judge John W. Eddy purchased one metallic casket and outside box $100.00, and an engraved name plate $3.00, total $103.00, from Herrmann & Co. Funeral Home. There was no charge for burial in a cemetery in Helena.

A coffin was discovered on 6/17/2005 while excavating a basement for a new house near the center of Clancy at the former site of the Red Cliff Farm, originally owned by Silas S. and Frances (Addis) Harvey in Clancy, Montana. The coffin was cast iron. The handles on the coffin were silver plated. The body and casket were moved to this cemetery. It was determined to be the body of Evelyn Mae (Harvey) Eddy.
