John Feeley Carle was the son of William Ross Carle and Mary "Polly" Feeley Carle. He was reared in Belmont County, Ohio, and married Ophelia Campbell there when he was 24. They had two sons, Harry and Charles, but Ophelia died just 3 years after their marriage, in 1876.

John, like many of his siblings, felt the call of the west and soon moved to Kansas, bring along his spinster sister, Araminta, to care for his boys. They settled in LeLoup, where John was postmaster.

In 1893, John married Emma Green Brown, and had three more children, all girls: Beryl, Rose, and Midget Emma, known as Midge. (All three of the girls lived into their 90s, and never married; their father joked that no man was good enough for them.) The family lived in Neosho Rapids, where John was once again postmaster.

John died just a month short of his 82nd birthday.
