Bessie R. Ellis, 97, Arvada, CO, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, in Lakewood.

She was born in Edina, MO, June 27, 1900, the daughter of James M. Sheets and Maggie R. Smith Sheets.

She grew up on the family farm and attended a one room school.

She was united in marriage to Joseph L. Stephan in 1917 on the family farm.

They made their home in the Edina area until 1935, when they moved to Longmont. After her husband died in 1937, she became a housekeeper for the Hover family. She also cooked for threshers and in timber camps.

She married Clarence E. Ellis in 1952, he preceded her in death in 1978.

Surviving are two sons, Earl Stephan and his wife, Velda, of Arvada and Joseph L. Stephan and wife, Judy, of Camden, Arkansas; two daughters, Mary R. Kelley of Arvada and Jo ann Kelly of Denver; one sister, Helen Ausmus of Edina, MO; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Preceding her in death were her two husbands; one daughter, Dorothy M. Gowen; six brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Ellis was a foster parent for Boulder County, Colorado for several years and later cared for the children of many other families. She belonged to the Longmont Church of the Nazarene and was an active member of WCTU for many years.

She always had a garden and raised both vegetables and flowers. She also loved to crochet and make lap throws.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel with Victor McIntire and F. B. Bigelow, retired Nazarene pastors, officiating.

Burial was in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver, CO.
