William Frederick Steuben Cole was the 4th son of Byrd Garland Cole and his mother may have been either Sarah Gudger Cole or Billie Harrison Cole. He was a CSA Veteran (Corporal, 50th Alabama Infantry, Co. H, of Walker County).

The obituary for William F. Steuben Cole appeared in the Cleburne Morning review on December 18, 1906, and read as follows:

"Death of an Old Citizen on Sunday

"Mr. W. S. Cole, Father of Hon. Abe T. Cole, Died at Age of Sixty-seven Years

"The friends of Mr. W. S. Cole will regret to hear of his death, which occurred in this city on Sunday morning at 9 o'clock. His death was due to bladder trouble. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. He was sixty-seven years old. He was born in Alabama, near Birmingham, and came to Johnson County, Texas, thirty-two years ago. He had only lived in Cleburne eighteen months. He was the father of Hon. Abe T. Cole, now of Clarendon, and eight other children. The friends of his family will join this paper in extending sympathy to the bereaved during this hour of sorrow."

According to William Frank Cole, William Frederick Steuben Cole was named after Revolutionary War General Freiderich Wilhelm von Steuben, who was the chief of staff for General George Washington.
