Per his death certificate found on Ancestry.com: he was a son of Benjamin Ray and Martha Rush and the husband of Annie Lafitte Ray. He was a marble salesman. He died of acute heart failure. The informant was Mrs. C. P. Warren of Columbia, S.C.

Found in The Columbia Record 6 June 1933: Funeral services for Hugh Alfred Ray, 72, who died Sunday at his home, 4923 Colonial drive, were held at 2 o'clock at South End cemetery, Bamberg. Services were conducted by the Rev. M. L. Banks, pastor of College Place Methodist church, and the Rev. L. L. Bedenbaugh, pastor of Bamberg Methodist church. Mr. Ray came to Columbia in 1912 and was a salesman for the Columbia Stone company. He was the son of Benjamin Ray and Martha Rush Ray, of Barnwell county and leaves many friends there as well as in Columbia to mourn his passing. Mr. Ray is survived by his widow Mrs. Annie Lafitte Ray, of College Place; five daughters, Mrs. Frank Harris of Columbia, Miss Hughleen Ray of College Place, Mrs. Robert Hankinson, of Albany, N. Y., Mrs. C. P. Warren, College Place, and Miss Lafitte Ray, of Washington, D. C.; three sons, Hugh A. Ray, of Charleston, and Edward Ray and J. D. Ray, of College Place; a brother, J. W. Ray, of Omar, and six grandchildren.
