Mary was the second eldest of four girls born to Fred and Tillie Kostyszyn. She grew up in Fulton and Granby, NY. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through the fifth grade.
In her youth she worked as a house keeper and at the Sealright factory in Fulton.
Mary liked to dance and roller skate, which is how she met her husband Malcolm, when he was managing the roller rink in Fulton.
Mary and Malcolm were first married in Schreveport, LA on June 2, 1943, then had a Catholic ceremony on Grand Island, NY, after the birth of their son Nathan. (Both locations were where Malcolm was stationed at the time.)
She lived in Niagara Falls, NY for most of the rest of her life, starting with a house in "the projects" (housing for military families). In her later years she alternated between her home in Niagara Falls and her son's home in Michigan.
Mary died from a heart attack brought while dealing with a bought of double pneumonia, after living in the Faith Haven Senior Care Center for her last year. She was buried May 21, 2012, at 10:30 am, in St John's Catholic Cemetery in Jackson, MI.
A marker will be added at a later date.
