Boxer. Born Dov-Ber Rasofsky in New York City, he began his pro boxing career in 1929 and lost only four decisions in 82 fights. He won the World Lightweight Championship in 1933, but relinquished it in 1935, when he failed to make the weight requirement. In 1934, he won the World Welterweight Championship from Jimmy McLarnin and lost the title that same year. He regained the welterweight crown in 1935 and held the title until defeated by Henry Armstrong in 1938. During World War II, he served as a US Marine Corps Sergeant at Guadalcanal in 1942 and was awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action.
