Son of Alexander Hamilton & Alice Rosetta (Howe) Avery.
Co. I 4th ILL CAV, he joined Aug. 1861 and served over 3 years.
Attended school at Mendota, ILL 1865-66. In the spring of 1866 he went by train to Kansas City and bought a horse and rode north till he came to Richardson County Nebraska where he took a homestead and acquired other land.

He married Angeline Dalbey May 26, 1867 near Humboldt. They lived on the homestead the rest of their lives except 1874-75 when it was rented to B.H. Bailey for a year while they visited kin in Iowa and Illinois.
