According to a dear friend, Herschel was passionate about flying, so much so that after his sophomore year in college, he decided to join the Navy to become a Navy pilot. He was due to report just two weeks after the time of his death. Herschel was killed when a plane, in which he was taking lessons,crashed due to an aerobatics accident immediately after takeoff with the instructor at the controls.

He was confirmed at Congregation Ahavath Achim with the 1958 Confirmation class.

From the Southern Israelite Newspaper-

Herschel Rothenberg, 20, was killed Monday afternoon in the crash of a two seater training plane. The teacher-pilot was also killed in the plane crash near Lithonia, Georgia.

A native of Atlanta, Mr.Rothenberg was a member of Sherith Israel Congregation.

Unveiling services were held on January 31, 1965.
