PURPLE HEART TO ST. J.E. EVERHART, WOUNDED IN FRANCE

In a ceremony, Friday at O'Reilly General Hospital at Springfield, Mo., the Purple Heart medal was awarded to 2nd. Lt. James E. Everhart, Moberly, a member of the Infantry since July 3, 1941, and now a patient in the O'Reilly Hospital, where he arrived July 18.

Lt. Everhart, who was with the first Division to land on Normandy on D-day, was wounded by a bullet from a German machine gun. An official story from O'Reilly, telling of the award of Purple Heart by Col. Walter D. Vail, says Lt. Everhart was given sulpha and morphine immediately after he received his wound, was removed to a Battalion Aid Station, where he was given blood plasma, and then was moved to an evacuation hospital, where his leg was placed in a cast. From there, he was evacuated to a General Hospital in England and taken from there by plane to the United States.
