Thomas W.R. Saffen's 1st wife Elizabeth Scott died in 1863 soon after the death of their 2nd son, Louis, who only lived about 18 months. Francis S. (Frank) was her surviving son.
Thomas W.R. then married Catherine Duhme Dafey in 1864. They had 4 sons and 1 daughter.

Thomas W. R. Saffen, for many years a machinist in the Bass Foundry and Machine Works, died at 2 o'clock Saturday morning at his home, 902 East Jefferson Street, at the age of 73 years 1 month and 11 days. His death was strangely similar to that of a neighbor, Mathias Schuler, residing but a square distant, which occurred a few hours earlier.
Mr. Saffen succumbed to an attack of apoplexy with which he was stricken at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon, and death intervened eleven hours later without the patient having regained consciousness.
Mr. Saffen was born in Pensacola, Florida, and came to Fort Wayne in 1861. He was employed at the Bass Works a total of forty-six years and for a portion of the time was a foreman at the Superior Street Works.
Surviving relatives include the widow, four sons and a daughter – Frank, George B., and William R. Saffen and Mrs. Frank Shank, of this city, and Samuel D. Saffen, of Indianapolis. There are thirteen grandchildren.
Funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence. Rev. A. K. Zartman officiating; interment at Lindenwood.
