SAN ANGELO -- "As water reflects a face, so a man's heart reflects the man." Proverbs 27:19

Glendon Dudley Westbrook, 87, passed away Friday, May 11, 2012. A family visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2012, at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Glendon's memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Harris Avenue Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Bush and Travis Monday officiating. Arrangements are with Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Glendon was born on Jan. 7, 1925, the firstborn and only son of James Dudley and Jean (Girdwood) Westbrook. During his childhood, the family lived in Sonora, Quanah, Haskell and Dalhart. The family returned to live in San Angelo during Glendon's high school years. He was deemed too small to play football and eventually grew to be 6'4", but in high school he opted to play the trombone in the band.

Following graduation, he joined the Navy in 1943, during the middle of World War II. He was assigned duty aboard the U.S.S. Willmarth which was a destroyer-escort (DE). Following his service in the South Pacific, he was discharged from the Navy in 1946, joined the Naval Reserve and returned to San Angelo to begin his electrical career alongside his father. In 1947, he was called up for duty on the onset of the Korean War. During this deployment he was aboard an LST which was used primarily to transport troops, supplies and POW's. He was once again discharged in 1948, while in Japan and returned to San Diego.

Glendon attended electrical school in Ames, Iowa, and San Angelo Junior College while continuing his electrical apprenticeship with his father who founded Westbrook Electric Company. He and his father owned and operated the business for many years. After closing Westbrook Electric, Glendon enjoyed working for the City of San Angelo as the chief electrical inspector before moving to Florida for a few years and then returning home to San Angelo in 2002. Glendon enjoyed hunting, bowling, playing golf and watching THE Dallas Cowboys on TV. Christmas lights were a big event for the family and Dudley was the ?architect' of the color scheme and supervised to make sure it was "just right" before the grandkids arrived for the holidays. Our neighbors also looked forward to the new design each year. Glendon was very proud of his pecan and fruit tree orchards. He was "the" pancake chef on Sunday mornings for "generations" of grandkids as well as for his beloved Lions Club's community service projects where he would help feed thousands at Fort Concho's Pancake breakfasts or suppers. Lion Glendon served his East Angelo Lions Club and the community for decades. Like his father, Dudley, he was elected club president in 1969, and it was, at that time, the first father/son presidential combo for the club. Glendon was installed as the district governor in Chicago in 1980, and during the following year the international president, Bill Chandler, awarded him the first of his Presidential Commendation Medals. He attended all Lions District Conventions for 19 years and 18 Lions International Conventions everywhere from Tokyo to Montreal and throughout the United States. He served on District 2-A1 Cabinet for eight years; was the first in the East Angelo Lions Club to receive the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and received three Presidential Commendation Awards, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a district governor. He was blessed to meet and enjoy lifetime friendships with a Who's Who of Lions International members as well as his faithful friends in West Texas and the Hill Country. Glendon was an advocate for those in need, including fundraising and giving of his time and resources for children who attended the Lions Crippled Children's Camp in Kerrville, West Texas Boys Ranch and many other charitable organizations. Glendon was a former deacon at the Colorado and Jackson Street Church of Christ in San Angelo and was a devout Christian his entire life. Upon returning from Florida, he became a member of the Harris Avenue Baptist Church and at one time was a proud member of the choir.

He had a wonderful 87th birthday celebration in January for two weeks with friends and family calling and visiting. His "roommates'" at the Terrace asked, "Glendon, are you going to celebrate all month?" Ten days later he suffered a stroke, which would begin the long process of therapy, hospital stays and the final move to Baptist Memorials' long-term care facility where he was lovingly taken care of by a host of wonderful caregivers, nurses and aides.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Glen Perry Westbrook; and his teenage son, Larry Dan Westbrook. Glendon and Vera suffered the loss of her two sons, Jerry Don Jones and Tommy Clint Jones; and their precious young grandson, K.C. Jones.

Glendon is survived by his wife of 39 years, Vera Bearfield-Jones Westbrook. Other survivors are his daughters and their families, Glenna Westbrook Wilson and Dennis of Austin, Michael Wilson of Austin and Michele Wilson of Los Angeles, Calif., Rhonda Jean Westbrook-Nixon of Houston and her girls, Hillary Elise Nixon of Victoria and Caroline Leigh Nixon of College Station and their father, Zane Nixon; also survived by Modene Williams, mother of his children; sisters and their families who fondly refer to him as "Bubba" including Kathryn Savory of Shalimar, Fla., and her daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha Jarrett and Joseph of San Angelo and Cynthia Black and Rob, Nicole Black LeGault and her husband, Rob, and their baby daughter, Hope and Becca Black, all of Memphis, Tenn. The "baby" of the Westbrook family is Dad's little sister, Janie, who was only four years old when he returned home at the end of World War II. Janie Westbrook Rohatsch and her husband, Bob, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and their two children and families, Rob Rohatsch, M.D. and his wife, Linda, and her children, Jessika and TJ, of Connecticut and his daughter, Haley Rohatsch, of Fort Worth and Beth Rohatsch Lee and her husband, Mike, and their children, Alexandra and Colton of Denver, Colo. Glendon is also survived by his stepdaughter, Sue Van Dever and her husband, Vandy, of Montgomery, Texas, and their children, Heather Leonard and her husband, Steve, of Pensacola, Fla., Vandy Van Dever and Vanessa Porter; also a dear daughter-in-law, Pauline Jones-Norman and her husband, Steve, of San Angelo and their children, Tammy Jones Leonhardt, Wendy Jones Eller and Billy Norman; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. And many loving Bearfield family members including sisters and brothers-in-law, Clara Rinehart of San Angelo, Willie and Wilma Bearfield of San Antonio and Mattie and Emmet Brieger of Nogal, N.M., and their families.

The family would like to thank the many friends who visited Glendon at St. John's and Baptist Memorials and everyone who prayed for his recovery. A special thank you to the wonderful residents and friends of The Terrace who never ?forgot' to report on him and visited and sent countless prayers, greeting cards and for the many telephone calls. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the host of wonderful caregivers, nurses and therapists who encouraged Glendon when he was low and kept his spirits up.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Texas Lion Camp Inc., P.O. Box 290247, Kerrville, TX 78029, a camp serving special needs children or a charity of one's choice . Friends and family are welcome to view and sign Glendon's online guestbook at robertmassie.com, gosanangelo.com obits and lionscamp.com.
