Wellknown Summer Resident of Falmouth Passes Away.

In the death of William Taggard Piper of 179 Brattle street, Cambridge, Falmouth has lost another well-known summer resident. He died about midnight last Tuesday night at the Massachusetts Homeopathic hospital, Boston, of tonsilitus. His wife died about eight weeks ago of the same complaint.

Mr. Piper was born in Boston, August 9, 1853, graduated from the Boston Latin school and Harvard University, class of 1874, and took a post-graduate course at Trinity College, Cambridge, England.

He was a trustee and president of the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital, director of the Cambridge Trust Company, president of the Avon Home for Children, director of the State Insane Hospital, member of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts and of the Union and Oakley Country clubs.

He served two years in the Cambridge common council, one year as alderman and from 1891 until the new charter was adopted in 1910 as member of the school committee. He also served two years as trustee of the Cambridge public library.

Mr. Piper came to Falmouth in the summer of 1891, and that season the family occupied the Fiske cottage on Shore street. The following year he purchased a valuable piece of land on the Quissett road and erected a beautiful summer residence, commanding a fine view of Oyster pond and Vineyard sound. Every year since 1892 Mr. Piper and family have passed the summer months at their country place,The Uplands. This year, owing to the death of Mrs. Piper, the family decided not to come to Falmouth and the place was rented for the season.

Mr. Piper is survived by four children—two sons and two daughters. The sons are William B., and Ralph C. Piper, both graduates of Harvard, University; the daughters are Mrs. Matthew Hale; wife of Councilman Hale of Boston, and Miss Elizabeth B. Piper. Funeral services were held at Mount Auburn chapel on Friday afternoon. Interment in Mount Auburn cemetery.
