Carrie was the daughter of Edward Hughes Cantwell and Caroline Taylor. She was sister to the Reverand Mother Katherine "Kate" Ellen Cantwell (religious order of the Society of the Sacred Heart), Eva Marie Cantwell Loughlin, Edward Wolfetone Cantwell and Edna Cantwell Catcott. In 1891 Carrie married Michael F. Kelly, M.D. at St. Mary's Church in Fall River, Massachusetts. Carrie and Michael had three children: Christopher Cantwell Kelly, Mary Philomena Kelly Hart and Eva J. Kelly Betz.
