Listed in 1870 has Cates family.
finding him listed elsewhere also as Cates and a family tree for Cates family. So, I may have to change the Gates to Cates.

1860 Census: Machiasport, Washington, Maine:
Atkins Cates is 48, Susan is 43, Lucy E. is 21, Antoinette is 20, James W. is 14, Elisabeth is 68(His Mother)

1870 Census Machias Maine
Atkins is 57, susan is 53, Mercy is 32 and Antonette Crocker is 29. (married name, but husband isn't listed).

Still looks like Gates to me, but they have him as Cates:
US Fed Census Mortality Schedule:
Atkins S. Cates (Gates) age 66, maried, born in Maine, Father was born in NH and Mother born in Maine, he was a Sea Captain, died in April from pneumonia.

Family tree indicates that he actually died in bostonm Mass.
Son of Henry Cates and Elizabeth (Betsy) Marston.
Married Susan G (possibly Gardner) Palmer. they had 3 children Mercie (Mary) E., Antooinette and James Warren (1845-1866). Family tree indicates that James, born in Machias, Maine died in New York, NY. (I had a stone that just said James, so now I have the rest of the info).
