Elmer spent his early years in Tipton, Iowa. He married Emma Mae Shreve in Sibley, Iowa November 25, 1913. They came to Casper, Wyoming in 1928. He worked on several ranches in the area until he went into carpentry. He formed his own consruction cew and went into the home building business. His first wife, Emma, died in 1934 and sometime after that he remarried a Lydia Henrietta Goetz-married name. During WWII "Jim" was a carpenter at the Casper Air Base. In 1951 he moved to Los Angeles, California, then on to Pamona, California in 1961 to live with a daughter.
