Motion Picture Producer. As head of Universal Studios' comedy unit from 1917 to 1929, he produced over 500 slapstick shorts, including the popular "Buster Brown" and "The Newlyweds and Their Baby" series. He was notorious in Hollywood for his relentless cost-cutting. When a director once asked for an expensive location shoot, Stern famously replied, "A rock is a rock, and a tree is a tree. Shoot it in Griffith Park!" Director King Vidor used this remark for the title of his autobiography, "A Tree Is a Tree" (1952). Stern was born in Fulda, Germany.
