Taken from "Echoes of Their Voices " - a Saga of the Pioneers Who Pushed the Frontier Westward to the Mississippi, by Carl R. Baldwin p. 286

Christian Etz was a cabinet maker, fed up with many things, including the autocracy of the church. Without a by-your-leave, one of his daughters had been disinterred from her grave to make way for one of the clergy of the denomination.

Etz and his wife Christina (Doerr)Etz, lived with friends in St. Louis for his first two years here. From 1844-1846, Etz followed his trade. In 1846-47 they moved to Monroe County Illinois to be near relatives. They were squatters at first on the old Gilmore claim, which had not been worked because the head of the Gilmore family had a drinking problem. Etz worked the Gilmore property for four years. In 1850 part of the claim was put up for sale to satisfy debts and he bought 40 acres for $500. One of the Etz daughters, Philippina, married Jacob Gummersheimer, and it was he who built a substantial two story brick home in which the author was visiting. ( Herb Mueller, Jr's father's house, which has since been torn down)
