John Marcus Wells was one of 10 children born to John Eli Wells and Katherine Barbara Dowdy.
On July 18, 1886, he married Phoebe Jennie Drennan, the daughter of Joseph Charles Drennan and the late Mary Jane Hopper. Phoebe passed away on April 9, 1889, at the age of 18, less than two years after their marriage.
On July 22, 1891, John Marcus Wells married Minnie Bennett, the daughter of John B. and Frances Bennett. John and Minnie had a daughter Louella Wells born on March 14, 1895, in Ratcliff, Texas. They had a son Delbert Wells born on January 3, 1900. Minnie died a few days after the birth of that son. The child died the following year.
In June of 1900, when the census was taken, widower John Marcus was living with his parents John E. Wells and Barbara C. Wells in Coltharp with daughter Louella age 5 and Delbert age 5 months.
About 1901 John married Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Best. They had a son Arthur Wells born on September 16, 1903, in Houston County, Texas. John and Lizzie had a daughter Lillie E. Wells born in August 2, 1906. They also had an infant daughter born July 26, 1913. Sadly, that precious child only lived a few days.
By 1910 John and Lizzie had moved to Trinity County where John farmed. There he lived for the remainder of his life. Lizzie passed away in 1923. In 1930 John was living with son Arthur who was also farming in Trinity County.
