Ray was the son of Augustus Eugene Burman and Helen Strain Burman.
He married Myrtle Mae Braund on Feb 12, 1902 at Klemme, Iowa.
They moved to a farm near Forest City, Iowa and farmed most of their lives.
They had three children: Ross Raymond, Mildred Helen, and Wayne Milton Burman.

After Myrtle's death (1927), he married secondly- Florence Crane Hill. on Sep 7, 1929 at Algona, Iowa.
After Florence died in 1940, he married for a third time, to Minnie Smith at Burlington, Iowa on Apr 16, 1947.

He was an active member of the American Baptist Church, and was a deacon in the church at Forest City.
