James T. Kyle enlisted as a Private on January 6, 1862 in Company "B", 4th Regiment, Alabama Volunteer Infantry and died Jan 10, 1863, in a hospital in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. His widow, Sarah Kyle applied for her husband's CSA pension on July 31, 1899, in Winston County, Alabama. In November 1906, Sarah moved to Lawrence County, Tennessee. On January 21, 1911 she reapplied for her husband's pension and this time affidavits from Robert Downey and Thomas J. Lynn who both said James Kyle died in Atlanta in January 1863. However, a letter from Jasper N. Kyle (brother of James T. Kyle) said he died in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1862. Jasper Kyle later sent another letter dated July 16, 1911 stating his brother had in fact died in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia in February 1863. Jasper then explained in that letter that the information was from their father, William Kyle's records. Jsaper said his father had gone to Atlanta and his nurse, William Pope, told him when he died. Sarah's Indigent Pension #3461 was rejected. They could find no record of James T. Kyle's service in the CSA.
