Josiah Jordan Anderson was the son of Robert Sanders Anderson and Sarah Elizabeth Wooten. Just before turning 18, he enlisted in his brother Ruel's artillery battery (Company B of the 14th Georgia Light Artillery, known as Anderson's Battery). He served as a private and guidon (flagbearer). Joe was especially noted for his actions during the Battle of Griswoldville. With his flagpole shot to pieces, he decided to stand on his horse to wave the flag. His horse was soon shot from under him and landed on his legs. He was prematurely reported dead to his brother, but once the horse was removed, he proceeded to keep the flag waving. After the war, he married Laura L. Shepard of Hayneville on June 25, 1867, in Houston Co. They had 6 children that lived to adulthood. Joe was a large landowner and farmer.
