In 1892 the family emigrated to the US, but they returned to Sweden in 1895. Ernest returned to America in 1905, when he got a job with the AT&SF in Chanute, Kansas. Some years later he was settled in Topeka, still working as a wood machinist for the railway company. He married Hilma Larson, who also had come from Sweden to Kansas. In 1913, their only daughter Margaret was born.
