Ernest was born in 1882 to Johan Henrik Jonsson and Kristina Augusta Söderbom in the town of Gävle (Gefle). His father was a first mate on sailing ships and later captain on a tug in the port of Gävle. His father job meant tht he was away for long periods, sailing to both Australia and America.
In 1892 the family emigrated to the US, but they returned to Sweden in 1895. Ernest returned to America in 1905, when he got a job with the AT&SF in Chanute, Kansas. Some years later he was settled in Topeka, still working as a wood machinist for the railway company. He married Hilma Larson, who also had come from Sweden to Kansas. In 1913, their only daughter Margaret was born.
