World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Leeds, England, he served as a Sergeant in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, British Army. During the attack on Havrincourt, France, on September 12, 1918, German machine-gun fire was creating a difficult situation for the advancing Allied troops. Sergeant Calvert went forward alone against a machine-gun team, bayoneting three and shooting four. He then again single-handed attacked another machine-gun team and killed the crew. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on November 15, 1918 and also made a Chevalier de l'Ordre de Leopold II of Belgium, for his fighting record in the last few months of the war. He died at age 72 in Dagenham, England.
