Doris Helen Grabill, the daughter of Uriah Scott and Ethel York Holloway, was born February 11, 1915, at her parents' home in Hamilton Township, Harrison County, near Eagleville, Missouri and died October 24, 2008, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 93 years, 8 months, and 14 days.

Doris' mother, Ethel, died when Doris was five and she was raised by her dad and step-mother Lucile, with a lot of help form "Uncle Jim" Holloway. Doris attended High Point rural school in Hamilton Township through the 8th grade, repeating the 8th grade, as she wanted to go to high school, but her dad didn't think that was necessary, but wanted her to be well-educated. After school, she then helped care for her younger brothers and sisters. Doris also helped at the church. She would go in and start the fire in the wood stove for Sunday services and funerals so the church would be warm for others. Doris was baptized in a pond and confirmed July 24, 1932 at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Lone Rock Church in Harrison County, Missouri .

On October 7, 1933, she was united in marriage to Garland S. Grabill, in Leon, Iowa. They started farming in Missouri until April of 1937, then moved to a farm near Marne, Iowa. At this farm, Doris was between the wash house and their house when she stepped on a live electrical wire. She was knock to the ground unconscious and after awhile, she could her a child crying. With determination to find and help the chid, Doris roused herself. Family found her and she somehow survived that ordeal, but put a scare in everyone.

In 1942, they moved to a farm north of Harlan, Iowa, then in 1944 bought their farm in Douglas Township, near Fiscus, Audubon County, Iowa. Garland had hired some men to take care of a rat infestation on this farm. The men put out rat poison and left a partial bag open. Doris, hadn't seen rat poison before and put some in her hand to see what is was like, rubbed her hand on her apron and went to the garden and orchard. There, she picked and ate some cherries. Immediately, she didn't feel well , then thought about the rat poison. She quickly went into the house, beat some eggs and drank the raw eggs. She vomited and Garland knew that he had to get her to the hospital. The doctor said that by drinking the raw eggs and vomiting, she had saved her life.
Garland and Doris operated this grain and livestock farm until they retired from farming and moved into Audubon in 1969. Doris worked as a waitress at the Holiday Café for several years until she retired. She really enjoyed talking and joking with the customers.

During retirement she enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, raising flowers and doing yard work. She also enjoyed the 3rd Avenue birthday parties. Garland died March 27, 1985. Doris enjoyed her home, then moved to the Friendship Home on April 5, 2002.

Doris was an active church member of the Community of Christ in Harlan for many years and enjoyed the summer retreats at Spring Brook Park in Guthrie County, IA. Doris enjoyed traveling both nationally and internationally. She was a very good cook and enjoyed baking.
