World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lance Sergeant in the 22nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. On February 17, 1917, during an attack at Courcelette, France, Lance Sergeant took command of his company after all the officers had become casualties. He organized the men, rushed a German machine gun nest and held the barricade for nearly three hours against seven determined counter-attacks. For gallantry in action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in June 1917 and later achived the rank of Second Lieutenant.
