Writer. He was one of the best known writers of the late twentieth century, author of novels and essays, among them "Aura", "The Death of Artemio Cruz", "Where the air is clear", "The Good Conscience", "The old Gringo" and "Terra Nostra". Has received, among others, the Romulo Gallegos Prize in 1977, the Cervantes in 1987, the Prince of Asturias Award in 1994 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabel la Católica in 2009. He was named honorary member of the Mexican Academy of Language in August 2001. His works have been translated into English and other languages.
