Dr. Nichols was born in Evansburg [correction: Enosburg] Franklin county, Vermont, 90 years ago, June 27 last. At that time he celebrated his birthday surrounded by his children and grandchildren, it being his last reunion time on earth. He was educated in Vermont and later taught. After this, he entered the Medical College at Crown Point, N.Y., from which he graduated in 1855 and later took a postgraduate course in the New York City Medical College.
He practiced medicine in Illinois for several years, then came to Clinton and practiced here for more than 20 years. He lived in Clinton the greater part of his life. He united with the Congregational church in his youth, but after coming to Clinton joined the Presbyterian church. He has served in it faithfully and was one of the elders for many years, seldom missing a service.
He was married to Permelia Ann Cheek, July 30, 1856 and they lived to celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary. This beloved companion of so many years survives him with one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Stevens, of Boston, Mass.; and four sons - Chas. and Will of Seattle, Wash.; Arthur and Fred of Kansas City. There are 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. His body was brought to Clinton Wednesday night and taken to the home of his niece, Mrs. Wm. S.
