Corporal Walsh was part of a flight of three F7F Tigercats belonging to VMD-254 that were transiting from Okinawa, Japan to Tsingtao, China. Due to unknown circumstances, two of the aircraft were forced to make a hard landing on the north shore of the Shantung Peninsula. The aircrew for these aircraft survived and were returned safely to Tsingtao. The third aircraft, piloted by Lieutenant Padgett and with Cpl Walsh onboard, landed in the water. The body of Cpl Walsh washed ashore and was identified.
