John Kane was born in County Clare, Ireland on July 20,1838. Shortly after immigration to the United States, John volunteered to serve in the Civil War.( Enlistment 9-16-1861) John served in the Union Army in the 43rd New York Infantry, known as the "Yates and Rifles". He served through many battles including "The Battle of the Wilderness",' Cold Harbor" VA, where he was wounded. Recovering from his wounds John went on to serve in the "Battle at Gettysburg". He was mustered out on Sept. 16,1864, and returned to the Albany area where he married Anna Larkin on September 25,1864. John and Anna had 11 children. John and his wife were very active in the Veteran organization "Thurlow Weed" Post 400 GAR. John worked for the Railroad as did most of his sons.
