James Leonidas Wilkinson, son of Colonel Joseph B. and Elizabeth Ann [Nicholson] Wilkinson, was born on December 30th 1845 in Autaugaville, Alabama. James was educated at the local Autauga Academy.

At the age of 17, young James, still a student at the time, enlisted as a Private in Company G, 6th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Sergeant on April 28, 1862 and elected 2nd Lieutenant on December 1, 1862. He served with his unit in every engagement to Northern Virginia. On the 5th day of battle at Spottsylvania; he was wounded in the neck and died May 12, 1864. The day before his death, Lieut. Wilkinson had been recommended for promotion by Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Lieut. James L. Wilkinson was buried by his trusted servant, Henry Howard on the battlefield near the spot where he died. After the war, Henry went with Dr. John Wilkinson, James' brother, to this spot and brought his body home to Autaugaville and buried James in the Taylor Family Cemetery.

"When Lieut. James L. Wilkinson was killed at Spotsylvania, Henry Howard constructed a rude coffin and buried him beside Newel M. Stoudenmire, a messmate of ours, who had been killed a few days before. Lieutenant Wilkinson had a gold coin given him by his mother when he first left home which he prized and carried as a souvenir. Henry found this in his pocket, with some other things, which he turned over to the Captain of our company, and are still in possession of his mother's family. He nailed a board above their graves on the trees under which they lay, and after the war Dr. John Wilkinson and N. M. Stoudenmire's father took Henry with them to Virginia and brought their bodies home with them, also the remains of L. T. Golson, who was killed at Chancellorsville…"
