According to Civil War records Pleasant Howard joined for duty and enrolled in the Confederate Army on August 10,1861 at Camp McGinnis, Overton Co, TN as a private by A.B. Hardcastle enlisting for a period of 12 months. Pleasant's horse had a valuation of $110 and he was present for duty at Camp Myers Tennessee on October 1,1861. This was Captain W.S. Bledsoe's Company "F" of Cavalry in Murray's 4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment later became Spiller's Battalion in August 1862 and disbanded January 23,1863 into other companies. It is not known how long Pleasant served in the military but he was around home enough to father Martha Tennessee Howard who was born in 1864.
Pleasant was killed as a result of the discontent of the post Civil War era. Allegedly two neighboring "friends," Yankee sympathizers, came to see the father in the field, shook hands with him, and then shot him, cold-blooded murder. This area of Tennessee was in the part of the state that was mixed in their support for the war. That is to say, as many people supported the Union as the Confederate armies. The roving bands of soldiers and or other gangs stole everything the Howards had. In 1874, Abigail and the children sold their 500 acres for $100 to John C. Wright, a nephew of hers, and went to Livingston, Overton County, Tennessee to live.
