Bess was born in Honea Path, Anderson County, South Carolina daughter and of the late Dr. Thomas A, Ella Gaines Hudgens and widow of Dr. James Wallace Payne. She was a graduate of Columbia College and Scarrett Bible School in Nashville, Tennessee. She was an officer in the Southeastern Jurisdictional Women's Division of the Methodist Church; past president of Western North Carolina WSCS and trustee of Pheiffer College in North Carolina. Among her survivors are two daughters, Mrs. R.L. Moffett from San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. E.L. Getchell from Winston-Salem, North Carolina; one sister, Mrs. L.L. Wright from Honea Path,South Carolina and four grandchildren.
Services were held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Thursday at 2 p.m. with internment in Kinards Methodist Church Cemetery.
