Johan Berndt Johansson was born 13 August 1828 at Hulegården, Stråvalla, Hallands län, Sweden, the son of Johannes Jönsson and Anna Andersdotter. He married Johanna Lena Samuelsdotter on 29 December 1855 in Värö, Hallands län, Sweden, and had seven children: Anna Sophia Johansdotter, born 1855, died 1944; Marta Lena Johansdotter, born 1856, died 1856; Marta Lena Johansdotter, born 1857, died 1857; Anna Johanna Johansdotter, born 1859, died 1931; Anders Johansson, born 1861, died 1938; Inger Lena Johansdotter, born 1864, died 1935; and Johannes Johansson, born 1867, died 1934.

Johann Berndt Johansson (John B. Johnson) sailed to American on 8 March 1872 on the Steamer "Hero" from Göteborg, and arrived about 10 March 1872 at the Port of Hull, England. He then sailed on 13 March 1872 on the SS Spain from Liverpool, England, and arrived on 26 March 1872 at the Port of New York, and then traveled to Ludington, Michigan, where his younger brother, Anders Johansson, was then living (he returned to Sweden in 1873). On 8 September 1876 his wife, Johanna Lena Samuelsdotter, and children Anna Johanna Johansdotter, Inger Lena Johansdotter, and Johannes Johnson sailed from Göteborg on the Steamer Orlando. They arrived in New York on 25 September 1876 on the SS City of Richmond. On 19 September 1879 his remaining children, Anna Sophia Johansdotter and Anders Johansson sailed from Göteborg on the Steamer Orlando. They arrived on 6 October 1879 in Quebec, Canada. Finally after seven years his complete family was together again in America.

The Emanuel Lutheran Church register states that he died on 17 March 1893; however, the Lakeview Cemetery records state that he was buried on 6 March 1893. There was no death record in the Mason County, Michigan, Death Records. There was also no known surviving newspapers in Ludington around this date to further document his date of death.
