"Deceased was born in Baden, Germany, and came to this country in 1840. He first settled in Phila., where he was employed in a wholesale grocery store. In 1857 he came to Reading and purchased a piece of ground at 10th and Chestnut, where he erected 8 houses. He opened a wholesale and retail grocery store in the corner building which he occupied until his death, a period of 40 years. He owns a large number of properties and was very successful in businesses. He is survived by his widow Marie; one son, Frederick Wilhelm; 4 granddaughters, and one sister, Mrs. Eva Leopold, of Baden, Germany. He was one of the oldest and most active members of St. John's German Lutheran Church and the German Lodge of Odd Fellows. He leaves many friends."

"Frederick Lehman, 1003 Chestnut street, died at his home yesterday after noon, aged 74 years. Mr. Lehman was one of Reading's oldest and best known citizens, having conducted the grocery store at his present location, Tenth and Chestnuts streets, for the past forty-one years, and built up a lucrative trade.
He was married twice, his second wife and son, Frederick William, surviving him. Four grandchildren also survive. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church the German Lodge, No. 158, 1. O.O.F.
Mr. Lehman was born in Baden, Germany, and came to this county in 1847, and moved to Philadelphia in 1849, and in 1857 came to Reading and located at his present place."

note: Frederick remarried after the death of his first spouse, Maria (Mary). His second spouse was named Marie, and she is the wife mentioned in the obituary.

Besides a sister who survived him, Frederick had a brother in Germany who predeceased him. There may be other siblings as well.
